Blending in with their surroundings is the key to survival for both predator and prey. Some creatures are born with the ability to change colors, such as the Anole Lizard and Green Lynx Spider. Transparent wings are the unique gift of the Lace Wing and Dragonfly. Grasshoppers have a wide range of color and pattern variations and seem to know exactly where to hide. The Walking Stick even sways back and forth when the wind blows to better fool potential predators. Others attach objects to their backs, such as flowers, sticks, leaves and even empty insect carcass'. Many create their egg sacs or cocoons in specific colors and textures. Compared to humans, they are tiny and fragile, yet have exactly what they need for the life they live. Here are photos of a few of these fascinating creatures who share my gardens.
